Evolving strategies for hypermedia creation – especially the Web – depend to a large extent on technological choices and possibilities, which in turn are constantly shaped by the logics of creation, their mode, models, work, product and services.  In such a scenario of interdependency, the advancement of interface design, collaborative writing, interactive and collaborative scripting, and representations of space and time, should regularly be studied and defined, at the conceptual and implementation level, as novel tools and usages appear. The research activity carried out in the field of interactive scientific and cultural mediation by information and communication scientists within Paragraphe Laboratory is nourished by this constant watch on technology, ergonomics and cognitive science.

In this interdisciplinary perspective, the CRAC group from Université Paris 8, which specializes in cognitive science, joined Paragraphe in 2005. This association is consistent with the laboratory’s logic of interdisciplinary development. It will allow cross fertilization between technological approaches and human and social sciences, by creating a favorable environment for research done in common, both empirical and theoretical.

Paragraphe Laboratory endeavors to carry out a reflection that shows the continuous mutual influence of these perspectives. On this ground, Paragraphe is now recognized as one of the major research institutions, from the theoretical as well as R&D standpoints.

Activity

Conference organization (2004-2008)

H2PTM

Paragraphe has been organizing for 18 years a bilingual international conference that takes place every other year: “Hypertext, Hypermedia, projects, tools, and methods” (H2PTM). The conference’s themes offer a meeting point between information technology and information science on the one hand, and human and social sciences on the other. This conference bears testimony of the truly interdisciplinary nature of the laboratory and favors an actual and valuable commitment of every research group in it.

The eighth H2PTM conference was held from November 29th to December 1st, 2005 at Université Paris 8; it was dedicated to the topic “creating meaning in the digital era”; its proceedings have been published by Hermes Publishing Company under the title “Créer, jouer, échanger : expériences de réseaux” (“Creating, playing, exchanging: network experiments”). Co-chair: I. Saleh.

The ninth instance of the conference was held in Hammamet, Tunisia, on October 29th, 30th, and 31st, 2007; its proceedings have been published by Hermes Publishing Company under the title “Collaborer, Echanger, Inventer : Expériences de réseaux” (“Collaborating, Exchanging, Inventing: network experinents”). Co-chair: I. Saleh.

The tenth instance of H2PTM will take place at Paris 8. It gives an account of the progress of research about and development of hypertext and hypermedia in the last twenty years, and an assessment of their prospects for the years to come.

E-Poetry

The e-poetry symposia, created in Buffalo by Loss Glazier in 2001, are a major event for the circulation of digital poetry. Every other year, they give to researchers and authors of all countries an opportunity to get together, to exchange, and to exhibit the state-of-the-art research and creation in the field.

E-Poetry Symposium 2007 was organized by Paragraphe Laboratory at Paris 8 University, on May 21st to 25th 2007, with support from the Scientific Council, T3L Master, Electronic Poetry Center (New York University at Buffalo) and West Virginia University. Co-chair: P. Bootz.
